Front Yards in Bloom

Front Yards in Bloom is a program initiated in Edmonton in 1999, whereby Canada Post letter carriers nominated the best front yards on their delivery routes. In the first year 150 nominations were received.

In the second year the program expanded. Letter carriers again nominated the best front yards on their routes, while retired Canada Post employees, members of the Canada Post Heritage Club, nominated the best yards in areas without door to door delivery. A total of over 300 nominations were received.

In 2001 a 'natural' category was added to the competition to recognize yards with a 'natural' look. Such a yard may have an emphasis on natural materials, reflecting a native plant community as woods or grasslands, or a treatment that would tend to reduce the need for water or chemicals.

Yards in the ornamental category use non-native plants to maximize colour, provide an abundance of blooms, and use a design that generally includes mown turf, cultivated beds and decorative man-made objects.

In 2005, in addition to Canada Post letter carriers, all Edmontonians were able to nominate the best front yard in the city.

The nominated yards are judged by Edmonton Horticulture Society volunteers, who place a sign on the front yard in recognition of having been nominated. Additionally, all nominees are invited to the Edmonton in Bloom Celebration.
