Scarlet Runner Beans - Most of the back yard has a southern exposure and receives full sun, although there are some shade from the mature spruce, green ash and a fabulous apple tree. Annie picked up some bean seeds at the Home & Garden Show, from the Horticultural Society’s booth. About mid May, she started them inside and a week after that, planted them outside against her house, assuming they wouldn’t freeze if they were close to the foundation. After settling in, those beans really took off. Neither Annie nor Ken had ever seen beans grow like these. Were these some sort of strange mutant beans? Would they find a giant at the top? How high would they grow? Well, they actually turned out to be scarlet runner beans. But what fabulous scarlet runner beans! Tucked safely under the eaves of the house, sheltered by the mature trees. Growing as high as the roof of the house, with bean pods of just under 11 inches in length, Annie and Ken were wondering how much bigger this plant could possibly get. I’m not sure either, but they were certainly worth bragging about. Well done!
